An introduction

Hello. I was waiting for time to do the perfect, considered introduction but that time never comes, in life and especially in motherhood, so here goes.

I’m Emily and I create paintings of memories. I’ve added some photos of them here, unedited and straight out of the camera. My paintings are visual reminders of places visited and memories made. I paint at home in North London in the pockets of time and space I find. I did a photoshoot recently and we moved all the furniture out so the room looks quite expansive, but in reality it’s a shared space with my husband and two little girls, much like most of my time is shared between work and mothering.

I paint from my own memories, but also love to celebrate others, and am currently working on a commission for an abstract floral painting of a wedding bouquet and some large scale paintings for a newly renovated family home. I enjoy working on commissions, so do drop me a line if there’s something you’d like me to work on for you.

My work is all original paintings rather than prints. That may change down the line but for now I find it works best for my artistic practice and people tell me they like an original painting, too.

My work is inspired by motherhood, but my audience is not limited to just mothers. Mothering and caring for others take many forms and is not just limited to being a mother in the traditional sense, and I recognise that many people bring these elements into their lives.

Community is important to me, as is finding the right path in life. I set up Studio Lawen, meaning ‘joy’ in Welsh, to show my daughters that you can take an alternative path to a fulfilling life, and remind myself of this whenever I feel a bit vulnerable from pushing myself out there.

I have spent my career uplifting the work of others and used to sit on the Arts Board at the Royal Society of Arts, where I championed perspectives seldom heard. Redirecting my voice to uplift my own work is quite far out of my comfort zone, but a journey I feel very privileged to be on.

I’m currently setting up my online shop, where you can purchase my original contemporary abstract paintings, and I often share snippets of new work on my Instagram. My commissions are open so do drop me a line if you have a memory you’d like to celebrate.
